Filibuster #1 (Wendy Davis)
This performance was re-enactment of Senator Wendy Davis' 11 Hour filibuster against Texas abortion laws in June 2013. The performance was a full enactment following strict Texas filibuster rules of no sitting, leaning, drinking, eating, restroom breaks and completely on topic. The performance took place in the BRIC gallery where I performed against actual recordings of Texas senators attempting to derail Davis. Behind me we images of art work found in the Texas Senate and photographs of the actual filibuster in 2013. Next to me were books by prominent women of color writing about art and feminism such as bell hooks, Coco Fusco, Angela Davis, Cherríe Moraga, and Gloria Anzaldúa. It was performed at BRIC in Brooklyn as part of Whisper or Shout curated by Elizabeth Ferrer.
